Enjoy the Little Things

>> 09 November 2009

Do you think the advertising world understands it is only November? Not even mid-November but only the ninth yet?

I accept that Christmas items will fill the shelves in October-it's cool. I know there are people who finish their shopping ridiculously early...not me but you go girl!

But why on Earth are the 25 days of Christmas on ABC's the Family Channel starting on November 10th?

Also why is the local radio station starting their 27 days of Christmas on November 12th, seriously?

I love Christmas. I love it very, very, very much...from the day after Thanksgiving to the day after Christmas. That's it.

We take Christmas very seriously in our family.

The day after Christmas we tromp up to the tree farm in the mountains. We hike up and down mountains picking and choosing, going from one tree to another. This one is too fat, this one too thin, this one is moving-no, no, no- until finally the perfect 8 foot silver tip tree.

Over the past couple of years the Man-child has taken over the task of cutting down the tree. Poor kid- using the slightly dull saw provided by the farm, he saws and saws and then saws some more. Until he can claim victory, raising his arms in a V- sap covered blade in one hand! Victory forever is short-lived as we drag our tree back to the path so it can be picked up by one of the sleighs that run up and down the mountain. We ride along accepting candy canes and singing along with the Santa driver. While our tree is wrapped, we enjoy some blow-the-top-off-your-head searing cocoa. The teens morph back into little kids and chase each other with pine cones and swing on the 5 foot long swing.

Shopping, singing, cookies, decorating, parties, plays, dances, friends and fun!

We string popcorn. We make gingerbread houses. December 10th we have an ornament party- the kids go look at lights. On December 24th we have our friend’s breakfast. That night I make the kids go look at lights with me again with our peppermint flavored beverages. Once home the kids unwrap one present -their special pajamas. On December 25th we wait for the family to arrive- they open stocking filled to the brim with treats, gum, gift cards, a salami stick. The family arrives-I make a huge breakfast for the entire family and we open presents. We then go see a movie. December 26th Christmas is over- decorations are packed away and the tree is chopped up.

Do not force Christmas on me in November- don’t ruin the magic! Don’t make me dread something I love!

I love Christmas too and HATE that people try to start it too early. At my mom's we always get pajamas on Christmas Eve too and the next day there is a big breakfast. It's the most wonderful time of the year!

This is actually the first year I recall seeing Christmas decorations alongside the Halloween ones in the big chain stores. It hurt my heart.

Then, I went to the big evil corporate monolith store the other night to find that they had already started clearance on fall-themed and Thanksgiving merch. WHAT? Great, I guess, for those ardent Thanksgiving-lovers among us, but shitty for the holiday itself. It's just brushed aside anymore.

This weekend I went to the little allsorts store with the plank flooring, the one with the very charming Christmas displays and pretty unique ornaments. I was sad to see that their displays are pretty pitiful this year. I chalked it up to the economy, and asked the sales ladies if they'd be getting in any shipments soon. They were alarmed: "Oh nooooo. We stopped getting Christmas decor at the beginning of October." They told me that they'd started their Christmas push in early August.

What. THEFUCK.

I am so not ready for it yet either. Tonight there was some sort of Christmas movie starting on tv and my husband and I nearly banged heads lunging for the remote to change the channel! Too early!
