New Segment: Globe Trotting

>> 24 November 2009

Welcome to my new Monday morning segment: Globe Trotting. Insert cheering here. Yes I know it's Tuesday but work with me here for cryin' out loud. Every Monday I'll post a different place in the world I want to go.

According to my seatmate in the New Moon line- if you go to Taiwan, go to Modern Toilet.

My response "Mmmm, O…K…"

It's a restaurant WHERE YOU EAT.

Apparently the Taiwanese, at least according to my seatmate, have very short attention spans. And I thought Americans were bad. Apparently they have an insatiable craving for new things all the time. I personally can’t tell you if that’s true so for the sake of this post we’ll just take her at her word.

Modern Toilet owner Wang Zi-wei, 29 was an ex-banker who got his idea from the Japanese robot cartoon character Jichiwawa. He began selling chocolate ice cream swirls on paper squat toilets. Customers responded and he opened Modern Toilet in 2004.

At Modern Toilet customers sit on and are served from….. well toilets, all 100 seats. Sink faucets and gender-coded "WC" signs appear throughout. Napkins are dispensed in toilet paper rolls from above the bath tub-shaped tables. Customers sip drinks from plastic urinals.

The chain currently has 12 locations but plans for more. Would the US welcome such a place?

Just leads me to ask one question…how low can we go, how low can we go. Could I do it? Can I get past the icky thought and eat here…Hmmm. We’ll see.

I would constantly be getting up to use the real washroom if I ate there! Any time I'm in public and see a washroom I instantly have to go!
