Volunteer

Yesterday I realized the holiday season was soon to be upon us. In addition to the insane amount of celebrating we do during the month of December, I also try to change up the volunteering we do.
I think volunteering is one of the most important things one person can do in their life- even if it's only once a year- especially for the teen beasts.
Most years we sort the food at the local high school both before Thanksgiving and Christmas. The boxes of food are then delivered to local families. We sort the coats collected by a local radio station so they can be cleaned and distributed.
I’m all for generosity overseas but personally I like to help locally first when possible.
Last year I tried to change it up a little- we manned a gift wrapping booth at Barnes and Noble for a local food bank and a booth at the mall to collect money for a local children’s cancer organization. Unfortunately despite what you’d think these were less than fun experiences as it involved us sitting at an empty booth in an abandoned area of the mall for our four hour shift.
I think we want to do something a little different this year-to really help! Any suggestions?

Volunteer at an old folks' home. Some older people don't have friends and family so around the holiday season it's extremely lonely for them. It's nice for them to have someone that cares enough to visit with them. And by visiting, it gives them a chance to talk to someone about their lives, the past and present.
