Haiti

>> 16 January 2010

I, like the rest of America, have been tuned to NPR ever since the earthquake devastated Haiti.

It’s insane to think in the space of a heartbeat- their lives changed forever. All of them- millions of people. Their entire country is essentially gone. Sure they will rebuild, maybe even better than before but it won’t be the same. It won’t bring back the hundred’s of thousands of people who lost their lives, their family members, their limbs, their children, their homes.

It’s hard for me to listen as they report on the difficulty of getting emergency supplies to those in need. In the same breath, reporting on the looting. I feel like screaming. It’s not looting. They are trying not to starve to death. They are trying to get water, supplies. You don’t want them to take what they need? Then help them get it! The mommy in me, the manager, the person who gets things done just wants to step in, wants to yell- JUST DO IT! Don’t talk about it, don’t plan it to death, just get it to the people in need. STOP FUCKING AROUND.

But of course that’s just an emotional response. I know intellectually, the situation is way more difficult and complex than any of us can even imagine. There are no easy answers.

Isn’t that always the way…How do we help the people who need it the most?

My heart goes out to each and every single one…but as a very smart lady has said don't just pray- pay. If you feel you’d like to, there are plenty of options, here's a link to the Red Cross.
